The "platform"

At work, I'm on the Platform foundations team. Our managing director is starting to not really like the name "platform". Too many people are associating the name platform with just the Operating System. We use the term platform to mean "the set of technologies we manage as a whole". This includes the OS, all system utilities, the applications running on the system, etc. I have about 10 platforms I shepard, spread across 75 servers.

Well, in looking for a new name for "platform", I tried the thesaurus at thesaurus.com. I don't think it's being all that helpful.

Main Entry: platform
Part of Speech: noun 1
Definition: furniture
Synonyms: belvedere, dais, floor, podium, pulpit, rostrum, scaffold, scaffolding, skidway, staging, table, terrace

Main Entry: platform
Part of Speech: noun 2
Definition: policy
Synonyms: manifesto, objectives, party line*, plank, policy, principle, program, promise, soapbox*, stump*, tenets

While I think it would be kind of funny to use the term belvedere, dais, plank, or skidway, I don't think anyone else would go for it. Then I looked to see what they had for "system"

Main Entry: system
Part of Speech: noun 1
Definition: whole
Synonyms: arrangement, classification, combination, complex, conformity, coordination, entity, fixed order, ideology, integral, integrate, logical order, order, orderliness, organization, philosophy, red tape*, regularity, rule, scheme, setup, structure, sum, theory, totality, utilidor

Main Entry: system
Part of Speech: noun 2
Definition: plan
Synonyms: arrangement, artifice, custom, definite plan, fashion, logical process, manner, method, methodicalness, methodology, mode, modus, modus operandi, operation, orderliness, orderly process, pattern, policy, practice, procedure, proceeding, process, regularity, routine, scheme, strategy, structure, systematic process, systematization, tactics, technique, theory, usage, way, wise

Now this has some possibilities: combination, integral, order, structure, modus, and scheme might all work. The HPUXSecure platform becomes the HPUXSecure integral. Maybe I can influence some mathematics background on everyone else. We become the Integral Foundations team, and Humanities majors everywhere fear us.

This is what happens when you leave me alone for too long...
