Restaurant Review

The Commons
BYU Campus

The Cannon Center at Helaman Halls has been replaced with a new eatery called The Commons. It opened less than 2 weeks ago. The place is much larger than the old Cannon Center, they have designed it to look a lot less like some sort of barracks cafeteria. They have little tables to eat all over the place. They have lots of different food stations - cereal, burgers, salads, desserts, and a couple of entree sections. The place is organized to break up the table sections so it doesn't seem as loud and noisy as the old one. They have big giant picture windows on the North side of the cafeteria, it kind of reminds of the scene from Ghostbusters where Rick Moranis runs to the restaurant at Central Park for some reason.

The food was good, they have it set up to make the food just before you go get it. This makes it much fresher and hot. There are people in the inside section of the salad bar, continually refilling the stuff, so it doesn't get messy or nasty. I thought the place was well designed to limit the noise from the mass of diners, and I like the new tray return. (You have to see it, I won't describe it here.) The place looks much more like a campus cafeteria now, and lots less like a high school cafeteria like the old Cannon Center did.
