I called Northwest this morning. My question was about my CPAP and my laptop bag. (Their website said they had a strict 1 carryon per person rule.)
The lady on the phone told me that they really can't prevent you from carrying on medical equipment. Then she said "As for your laptop, well we know people don't like checking those as baggage." I asked her if I needed to give the ladies at the counter a smile, maybe bring them flowers.. She said just to maintain a low profile, they likely would not do anything about it.
